Kilkilleen, Skibbereen, West Cork Passive House - Wain Morehead Architects (1)Wain Morehead Architects

This distinctly modern family home is located on an elevated site in West Cork overlooking Roaring Water Bay and has been designed and constructed to meet the high performance criteria of passive house.

Kilkilleen, Skibbereen, West Cork Passive House - Wain Morehead Architects (2)The configuration and layout have responded to the topography and vistas prevalent on the site. A series of folds link the internal spaces to the garden and patio areas, and straddle a significant seam of sandstone. Large glazed areas frame the panoramic views.

The uniquely temperate climate enabled the use of extensive glazing. All service and ancillary rooms are located to the north of the building. The open plan kitchen, dining, living and sun room areas open out to the deck, reflection pond and informal garden areas, which are craddled by the natural rock crop as it taperes back into the landscape. The form of the stair continues the folded plate theme and draws one upwards to experience both the cool north and warm southerly light as they appear to embrace and simultaneously dance across the ceiling.
